RECOMMENDED COCO COIR SUBSTRATE FOR GROWING CANNABIS
To maximize yield and thus returns on growers inputs, it is imperative to use the best substrate growing cannabis in coco coir. The chosen substrate plays a critical role in the substrate-plant-atmosphere continuum in which the cannabis plant grows. With the limited research results available for commercial cannabis production, identifying ideal physical and chemical characteristics for the perfect substrate can be challenging.
The substrates physical and chemical properties will affect root penetration and expansion of the cannabis. In addition, the movement, retention and availability of water, acting as the carrier of nutrients in a soilless system, is influenced by the physical and chemical properties of the substrate. The physical and chemical properties of the substrate also affect the mobility, adherence and availability of the nutrients to cannabis plants. When any of these factors are negatively influenced by the physical and chemical properties of the substrate, there will be a reduction in plant growth and, inevitably, the yield.
With all this said, we want to discuss the procedures that we have instigated to ensure that growers get the best substrate to ensure exceptional cannabis growth and yield.
AGRONOMY RESEARCH TO ATTAIN IDEAL PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE SUBSTRATE
With only general cannabis plant requirements available through published research, we went further and analyzed and quantified all the variables in the physical and chemical realms of the substrate. As a result, specific procedures were recognized and introduced as part of the essential plan to ascertain the ideal physical and chemical properties present in the perfect substrate. These properties are scrutinized on an ongoing basis through collaborative research for even more substantial improvement of the perfect substrate in future.
COMPOSTING, SIEVING AND, MECHANICAL WASHING AND CHEMICAL BUFFERING
After a long period of composting (12 to 18 months), the coir is sieved to eliminate dust and decomposed matter. The sieving technology of Pelemix leaves a clean product with a higher porous content that increases porosity and water movement in the root zone. Excess salt is washed off during mechanical washing, and the coir is chemically buffered to lower the coir sodium or potassium levels, balancing the ratios of cations in the media. These processes will decrease the Electrical Conductivity and stabilize the Ph in the range of 5.8 – 6.0. An average Cation Exchange Coefficient (CEC) is typical with coco coir, and it can be buffered more if requested for an even lower CEC to eliminate the adhesion of nutrients.

COIR SEGMENTATION AND SCREENING TO GAIN IDEAL PARTICLE SIZES
The Segmentation Technology includes further sieving, and then the material is divided into three distinctive classes through segmentation. Another attribute is that a range of coir husk chips in specific particle sizes is included in the whole spectrum. Combining these materials in specific amounts gives ideal substrate physical characteristics for the perfect substrate.
FEATURES OF THE BEST COIR SUBSTRATE FOR CANNABIS PRODUCTION
By continuous collaborative research, we stay on top of the quality of their substrates for the cannabis grower. The ideal substrate is made through a well-planned process to achieve the same physical and chemical characteristics continuously. The optimum Ph for cannabis is 5.8 – 6.2, with the Ph of coco coir fitting into that range with 5.8 -6.0 and, therefore, ideal.
The substrates are decomposed, washed and sieved, leaving you with a homogeneous clean and chemical buffered substrate, an ideal Ph and an average Cation Exchange Capacity with a low Electrical Conductivity for optimal cannabis production. Further buffering to lower the CEC even further is done on request by growers.
Through segmentation, the Premium Long Fibers (PLF) is combined with chipped husks of a predefined standardized size to ensure a porous substrate beneficial to root growth and root elongation. In addition, the substrate has excellent water retention, drainage, aeration, and drainage properties.
